Ice Dam Removal
Ice Dam Removal is so important. This winter has produced an unusual amount of snow and we also had major rain in December. Most of that moisture is still up on the roof. Many of you may have noticed a ice dam build-up along the lower edges of your roof line but have no water problems inside, yet. I don’t want to alarm anyone, but this year is different from most other years.
Ice dams are caused by inadequate attic insulation and/or a lack of attic venting. Escaping house heat and sun melts roof snow and it re-freezes causing ice dams when it reaches the unheated area of the soffits. Water then dams up behind this ice dam and if it goes high enough up the roof, will find a way into your home.
If you think you have a problem, you probably do. It is NOT a good idea to wait until the weather warms and begins to melt even more snow. If you wait to remove your ice dam, other homeowners will also be in a panic for their ice dam removal at the same time. You may then have to wait to get a professional crew out while water damage may already have begun. The repair will then be more extensive and costly.
